April 17, 2014: a public lecture by prof. Charles Woolfson in Vilnius

On April 17, 2014 Lithuanian Social Research Centre cordially invites to a public lecture by prof. Charles Woolfson “After Austerity: what (or who) remains in Lithuania?”

In this lecture, sociologist, professor Charles Woolfson (REMESO, Linköping University), a former long-time resident in and current observer of Lithuania, tries to assess the social and economic costs of austerity policies and ‘internal devaluation.’ As economic recovery takes place and austerity seems to have been a ‘success’, this presents a useful point at which to take stock of future prospects for Lithuanian society, and to ask whether the current recovery is socially and economically sustainable in the longer run, particularly in the light of continuing high outward migration from Lithuania.

Together with Jeffrey Sommers, Charles Woolfson is the joint editor of the forthcoming book The Contradictions of Austerity: The Socio-Economic Costs of the Neoliberal Baltic Model, Routledge, London and New York, which examines the Baltic crisis and its aftermath.

The discussion will be moderated by prof. dr. (HP) Boguslavas Gruževskis (Lithuanian Social Research Centre).
