Public opinion and mass media monitoring

Since 2005, the Institute for Ethnic Studies has performed annual public opinion polls to analyse attitudes of Lithuania residents towards different ethnic and social groups (e.g. Roma, Jews, Muslims, refugees, etc.). Media monitoring has been implemented at the Institute since 2004, focusing on representation of ethnic issues and manifestations of ethnic intolerance in Lithuanian media.

Media monitoring

Since 2005, the Institute of Ethnic Studies has implemented media monitoring of Lithuanian press and compiled a database of texts on ethnic issues. In 2005–2008 texts for the database were collected from three main Lithuanian daily newspapers – Respublika, Lietuvos rytas, and Lietuvos žinios as well as from Internet news portals – Delfi, Omni (Balsas) and Bernardinai. Since 2009, media monitoring covers all Lithuanian newspapers and Internet publications. In the database, texts are sorted according to several keywords – mentioned ethnic groups (Roma, Russians, Polish, Chechen, Jews and others), religious groups (Muslims, Orthodox, etc.) and various migrant groups (refugees, immigrants, etc.).

The database is open for everyone and can be accessed at the Institute of Ethnic Studies with advance notice. Students and researchers willing to use the collected data for their research are welcomed to do so.

Public opinion polls

Since 2005, the Institute for Ethnic Studies has performed annual public opinion polls to analyse attitudes of Lithuania residents towards different ethnic and social groups (e.g. Roma, Jews, Muslims, refugees, etc.). All surveys are conducted by personal interview with respondents; the margin of survey error does not exceed 3 percent.

Results of annual public opinion surveys in English are available on demand at ces@ces.lt.
